Tap water purifier...a deionizing unit sold by all the major retailers. Not very expensive. How effective it is depends on your water quality. You don't say where you are. I'm in NYC, and my tap water is very high quality...a cartridge lasts me easily 4 months. If you are in an area with poor quality, a cartridge won't last very long, and ultimately you will need RO. So depending on what you have, a TWP could be a temporary stop gap measure or possibly all you will ever need.

Distilled water from your supermarket. In the long you'll save more $ with a RODI unit.

This is probably your best bet for good base water, although it must be expensive. I would imagine you can find a good barely used RO/DI system on many of these sites for cheap. I got mine for $75, and swapped out media for another $40. In the long run, and for convienence RO/DI is the only way to go. You might be able to get decent RO from you LFS too.
