i had my gf dad make me a custom 46 gal tank out of plexiglass. would it be a good idea to try and reinforce that and make it stronger for a saltwater tank, also how would i do that lol i mean i can ask him to do it but just want to know if its a good idea, i Know that it scratches easy but i think it would look really good

Fill up the tank all the way up after you re enforce. Then leave it full for a whole week and check for leaks too see if the tank is strong enough to be a s.w tank. Btw how thick is the pexiglass? IMO i wouldnt recommend it but what the hell try out see what happends.

I wouldn't try it. You can go to Petco and get a 40b or 55 for $1 per gallon. The way I see it, if a tank-maker needs someone to survey his house and property they call me. If I want a fish tank, I leave the building of it to the people who do it for a living. It's not worth the risk IMO. It could be fine for weeks or months or even years and could pop one day. Is that possible with a tank made by a manufacturer? Yes. But the chances are much slimmer.

Not an expert...but I think that plexi is different from acrylic...

Fresh or Saltwater it doesn't matter it the question is is it suitable to be a fish tank. Well 1st of all what did he use to make it? If he used weld on glue than it should be fine if the acrylic is thick enough..euro bracing also helps a great deal for stability. Please post a picture so we can see exactly how it was made. Why would you tell him he can't use it? What about custom sumps? They are made out of 1/4" acrylic usually, they hold water just fine. I have even built one myself and years later still holds water perfectly. Just because someone doesn't do something professionally doesn't mean they can't do it. Just because someone isn't an ultimate fighter does it mean they can't kick someone's ass? What about changing a tire or oil on a car? You don't have to be a mechanic to do that. Just because Angelo is addicted to MR doesn't mean he knows what he's talking about. LOL You guys should really think before you give people advice. Also petco's $1 a gallon sale ended about 2 weeks ago.

If you continue with this hobby, you will soon notice that the glass box containing the water is the cheapest part of the system. It also needs to be the most reliable, unless you want your room filled with water and dead fish. :) Don't skimp and get a tank that was professionally made.
