Ready to "move up", skimmer-wise...

I've been reefing for 5 years with 4 of that with a chronically overheated AP24. This spring I upgraded to a 46g bowfront with Aqueon ProFlex Model sump and a Coralife Super Skimmer (65 gallon size) - skimmer sitting in the sump. My understanding is that this skimmer is considered an entry-level product and from my limited experience I can see that it's very finicky to changing water levels in the sump and very inefficient. I would like to invest in a much more advanced, efficient skimmer. However, due to the configuration of my sump and amount of headroom between the top of the skimmer and underneath the tank the new skimmer must be the same basic footprint and overall dimensions as my Coralife. Any suggestions as to recommended brands and models?

your waterlevels should not be changing in your sump.if yur baffels are set right the water level by your skimmer should not change.if its changing that much your specific gravity is going to be off.i agree thats not a good skimmer.you should look into a euroreef or a vertex.

The Proflex sumps don't give you a lot of options as far as skimmer placement. Unless you have a tiny skimmer it has to go in the last section with the return where the level is going to fluctuate. Smaller bowfronts are cool but the design doesn't allow for a lot of space in the stand for filtration so you end up having to make compromises. There are several skimmers that will be able to handle that tank easily and for around what you probably paid for the Coralife skimmer.

A good skimmer makes it a lot easier but it doesn't define success or failure. What are the dimensions it has to fit into?
