It depends on the origin of the dead rock. There is dead stuff on it that may cause problems in the near future or stuff in it that may cause problems in the long run.

yeah it really also depends how big is ur tank and how much dead rock u putting in

+1 --- Add it slowly and over an extended period of time..a larger well established tank should be able to negate any ill effects of a cycle.

Unless you dont have any livestock in the tank yet. Then you may just want to put it all in at once..run the cycle and move on from there.

soak it in water in a bucket in the dark for a couple of days and all the dead organic matter left inside will leech out in the bucket instead of in your tank. Otherwise you could see a spike NH4 levels.

soak it in a bucket with water circulation for a few days. Put a lid on it, leave it in the dark.

yes I began this process today. I'm not in a rush due to recent mysterious behavior in my tubbs blue zoa. I had plan to wait at least a month anyway.

About my tubbs blue tho, I have 2 colonies one in the low zone and the other in the high zone (wanted to observe growth rate differences), they just started closing up out but it was only after I moved the lower one up less than inch. Two days later the lower one's heads are not all opening until today where none are opened.

Here's where the mystery comes in, the colony higher up has some heads that began to close up also, tho 75% of the colony opens. AND I have other zoas/palys that are opened 100% . . . additionally I have rics & a duncun no problems with them either.

I did have half a colony of zoas close up for a month and then magically came back to life so I'm hoping for the best but I want concrete solutions !:smash:

I added about 30lbs of dead rock that I only cured for two weeks to my 40 breeder. I was in a rush to get the rock in the tank so I didn't have a bucket sitting around for weeks, and my phosphates went up to .12 and now I'm battling hair algae from hell!

I think my bio pellet reactor i added two weeks ago is finally kicking in. The HA is turning brown and just comes right off the rock with a siphon.
