I have a small microwave box filled with sand in my QT. It works fine for burrowing wrasses.

Yes no sand is needed for qt so the PVC will work great, most lfs don't have anything in there tanks when they sell wrasses so I would not worry

+1. Its hard to show off a nice wrasse when they are dug in the sand
