What return pump gph?

What return pump gph should i get for a 40 gallon breeder elevated about 5 ft up? Any brand recommendations as well, looking for a quiet pump.

I have a Sicce Syncra and I really like it. For a 40b I would go with the 3.0. I went with the 5.0 on my 50b and it's way too strong so a 3.0 should do a 40 just fine. Even with a reactor or 2.

Depends on what your overflow setup is and what can it flow in GPH. Also, if running a sump you need to watch flow speed through the sump also. Not an easy question to answer without that info.

I would use a Marineland utility pump. you can adjust the output flow on these by the turn of a dial.

Thanks, i'm using a 15 gallon sump. The 40 gallon is reef ready and the drain line is about 1.5 inches wide on the upper right side, not bottom. Does that help?

Sounds like you have a 1" overflow (the 1.5" hole is the O.D. (outside diameter) of the bulkhead). The maximum flow rate for a 1" pipe is 600 gph. With 5' of vertical head you can use any of the following pumps for return:

Marineland Euro Utility Pump 3000
Eheim 1262 Water Pump
Supreme Mag 9.5 Water Pump
