I'm interested in getting a yellow watchman goby, but keep reading that it needs a lot of sand for its lifestyle.

I have a 14 gallon and about 2" of sand but not much actual sand is exposed because of rocks/frags plugs. do they really need a lot of open sand to be ok?

I tried one in my 36 gallon tank after having it running for about a year and even dosing it with pods. There was plenty of sand for it to sift through, and I kept seeing it sift, but it just got thinner and thinner. Couldn't get it to eat mysis, only live brine, and that didnt sustain it very long. In the end it succumbed to starvation. I wouldn't recommend it in such a small tank, especially if there is little sand.

thats more than enough. i had it in a 30g with maybe 2 to 3" of sand and was perfectly fine

mines fine in 2" of sand...they find places to dig
