Im new to reefing, not sure what rock formation and powerhead placement would work best. Tank is a 40 gallon breeder, currently have 2 korelia 750's but plan on replacing both with 1 korelia 1050. I know I should of figured this out while tank was cycling but didnt think of it at the time. Tanks been up for about 5 months.

Questions I have

1. I really want to remove the large rock on the right thats covered in green hair algea cause its just taking up so much space, it's about 25-30 lbs, will it be a shock to my system by pulling it out at this point?

2. When I install the new powerhead should I aim it directly at the corals/rock or bounce it off the glass/side of tank.

Thanks

You can remove it, scrub off the green hair if it's still there, break it into multiple smaller pieces and then return it to the tank if you'd like. It's live you might as well figure out a way to keep it.

I would just try to form some caves and a lot of voids in the rock so as you try different placements of your powerheds you'll see what works best.

The more ways water can travel around your entire tank the less dead spots and better for your whole system in general.

Make sure when you redo it you can fit a scraper between your rock and glass so it wont be another spot to possibly give you issues and you can also scrape coraline off once it grows.

Also try to push your sand away gently and place your rocks on the bottom glass and then re pack the sand to make it even more solid this way you never have to worry about burrowers(anything from nessariuse snails to gobies) will never cause the rockwork to fall and possibly crack your glass and they won't ever have rock fall on them and hurt/kill them.

With the powerhead you're going to have to figure out what works best for you, but I would avoid aiming the flow directly at your rocks, especially once corals are placed there.

Good luck man

Are you using rodi water and are you running carbon/phosban?

Where did u get the rocks from? Were they live rocks or dry dead rocks?

What are your water param.

Sorry for all the ?'s

I don't think any of that really matters in this case. All he wanted to know is if he could take out a rock, change his aquascaping and where to point powerheads. No reason to make him list a million things for a yes you can or no you can't and point it this way answers.

He didn't want advice on the algae or anything like that.

you can take your rock out and break it with chisel and hammer however, i would recommend you to trade/keep your nice large piece of rock. you might change your plan later.
in term of cleaning green hair algea, to me there is 2 ways to go about.

1) get the a sea hare. since you don't have any power head in the tank, a sea hare is great for eating all green hair algea without much work.
2) take the rock out and let it dry in the sun and acid/vinegar dip it, clean it then recycle it then put it in your display tank again.

if I was you, i would go with method 1.

weekly water change and flow in the tank will help exporting nutrient so your filter system can consume nutrient thus lead to algea growth

Yes been using rodi water since the start, been running chemi-pure elite since it cycled, bought 50lbs pukani dry rock and seeded it with 10lbs of fiji live rock, I have excess phophates in my tank most likely from the dry rock. I ordered phosban last week still waiting for it to get here. I also used reef crystals salt.
