always wanted an answer to this, so im finally asking. Whats everyone's policy on "cleaning" objects going into your tank? ex: tongs, new gloves, bucket for holding new water. even washing hands with soap before putting hand in tank

Just rinse with warm water?

I want to use a 5gal protein jug for my ATO but i dont know how to clean it to store top off water

A warm water rinse is sufficient to rinse things off as well. If you wash your hands with soap and water wait a while before putting your hands in your tank and even then rinse your hands in warm water before you do.

If you need to you can use soap and water, just make sure you rinse well and let it properly dry. The main concern is oils/chemicals/grease/ect getting into the tank. You need to properly break down whatever is on whatever your using. Stuff like oil or grease won't break down and wash away with just warm water and whatever your using to break down whatever is there also needs to be washed off.

Vinegar is used to break down and clean anything with calcium buildup/Coraline.

Little bit of bleach and a very good rinse/dry time is used to clean dirty filter socks.
