I just got a purple fire fish , he disapeared over night. He was healthy fish eating flake . I have read that they burrow in the sand if they are scared. Has any one expierienced this? The only thing I can think of is that he died and snails (nassarius)ate him. He is not in my sump looked around tank like crazy and I looked all over my aparment for the dried up body .

When they die they tend to flop and squirm pretty well and there's no telling where he could be if he escaped. Do you have a dog or a cat? Lol

Anyways, my best guess is that he's hiding but without a cover the odds are always against you so good luck.

Get that tank covered.

Yes a glass cover is not a good idea on marine tanks. However, you can easily make a cover out of NETTING. 1/4"

http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/diy-do-yourself/22953-acrylic-mesh-tank-cover.html

go through that "sticky" thread under DIY forum for a better understanding.

the first one in the thread kathyc created, there are many other versions throughout the thread and the internet. You can search DIY mesh cover, DIY fish tank netting...etc
they can be made with screen molding and some mesh/netting. 1/4" is your best bet.

I'd bet he's hiding. Mine hid for a long time when I first got it, now it hides every night. If you have rock on your sand bed I'd shine a light into any little openings and you might see him looking back at you. Give it time since he's new he's probably just testing the waters.
