It does not have sponge looking texture and it is a lil transparent.

It looks and sounds like a red algae. Don't know the specifics but its harmless and non instrusive unlike other algae. Kinda like red grape algae but different. If you take it out it will probably never grow again. Your hermits will eventually find it and eat it and it will be no more. Enjoy it while its still in there.
