I don't have a build post.

Finger joint would be sooo much work =) Butt joining the sides to the face would look unfinished, you want to miter sides and face of the stand with some support like lamello biscuits or domino's. Or butt joint and skin the stand with a better quality wood to make it look nice.

More importantly, What type of tools do you have? And what type of "look" are you going for with the stand? Is it going in a basement, does having it look nice matter? If your building the stand using a jigsaw, home depot for ply cuts, and some screws without a countersink you might want to go to someone to help you out. You can get away with it on 2x4's and some nails but not with plywood.

My father has a full woodworking shop in the basement ( that's HIS hobby lol) I was thinking I would use the pocket hole jig to join em if I do butt and gusseting the corners for additional rigidity. 2x4 is effective, just on my 40 breeder those 2x4' eat up a decent amount of real estate in just 36". I suppose for simplicity I could just make the stand 6" or so wider with 2x4's tho
