Thanks fishman1069
2, 1 1/2" drains how many return pumps cause just a little confused on this section of setup, protein skimmer goes in drain chamber. And what's better internal or external pump for sump. Like your opinion and advice on this also why would it be noisy. Thanks

Is this an old tank, or are you having it built, Most of the new tanks on the market only have 2-1" drains, and 2-3/4" returns.
As far as pumps go, if you have the room you can go external, this will cause less temparature increase in water,
As far as pumps go you would only need one.
Noise is caused by trying to force the maximum amount of water to drain down from a single drain.

Rkatagolzer thanks for information I'm planning on buying tank rr already drilled. So 2. 3/4 drains is better, one external pump. What size pump for a 180g tank, sump 3 chambers, protein skimmer is located were. Doing a refugium as well macro algae, like some opinions advice cause when I get tank i can setup plumbing, protein skimmer ready while tank cycles. What do you suggest as shutoff valves.

No 2-1" drains, are standard on that tank size. the 3/4" is your returns.
as far as pumps go that is up yo you on what kind of turn over you want in your tank.
I personally like to do a 4x turmover, so for a 180 I would do 720 gph, or around their.
The protein skimmer goes in the first chamber of the sump.
As far as shut off valves i don't beleive in them, unless you are goint to test them at least once a month. the reason is once you have calcium deposits built up on them they are virtually impossible to move, and if you do get them to move, the next time they will not seal right and not shut off.

I run two return pumps for redundancy.;) If one fails the other will keep the tank going until I am able to fix or replace the one that failed. It has happened to me at least twice. Currently on my 155 the return pumps are: Eheim 1262, and Iwaki WMD40RLT

Rkaragozoler thanks so 2 1" drains is standard for a 180. They don't come bigger, first chamber for protein skimmer where PVC drain is from display tank. How many drains should I connect also how many lines needed for flow sorry to bother you still a little lost with plumbing. And I plan to do more gph turnover thanks

I am not sure if their is any 180 gallon tanks out their with 1 1/2" bulkheads.
Depending how you have your sump made is what determines where the drain pipes go, most of the time. its skimmer, fuge, return. If this is the way you are going than both drain go to the skimmer area.
If you do a sump skimmer, return, fuge, than 1 of the drains get T'd off with a valve to control flow, to the fuge section, and the other end of that one plus the other side go to skimmer section
