So, I went ahead and exchanged my return pump and it is so much better. HOWEVER, the noise of the water draining into my sump is TERRIBLE! SOOOO LOUD. I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do and I'm really frustrated. :arg::help:

50 Gallon tank
25 gallon sump
1" Durso pipe ---> Bulkhead ----> 1" tubing ----> sump
Mag Drive 500gph ---> 1/2" tubing ----> bulkhead ----> return T pipe ---> Display tank

I did exactly what @ReefMonkey13 recommended from google, as well as put a sock at the end of the drain and boy, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!! Now if I can only find a way to make the humming from the return pump less noisy. Any suggestions? I am running a mag5. My hunch is that it is vibrating the whole sump tank which amplifies the sound. So, I placed it on top of one of those sponge filter squares. A little better, but still a bit loud. Just ordered an Eheim 1262. I'm hoping it will be much more quiet.

I would of recommended like a mouse pad or something, but the sponse filter would pretty much do the same thing.

Putting the end where the water dumps into the sump under the water level, will quiet that part up but seems like you found a solution for that already. Not sure what else to do but I heard those pumps are nice and quiet.

Ha! LBC? funny. I put a sock on it and it seems a bit better. I also love the extra layer of mechanical filtering. The eheim sock is turning yellow. is that normal?

Saltinmyblood, I'll check it out. mbg75, that sounds like a great idea! I'll try that next.

The eheim 1262 is much more powerful then your mag 5...so if that's vibrating the sump I'm sure the eheim is going to also..

You're absolutely right. I didn't think that through. I looked at another thread on the forum and realized I might have too much flow--at least where the return pump is concerned. In relationship to the 1" drain, the 500 was too powerful so I went with a mag drive model 3. It solved the whole problem.
