huge problem???

When we got the tank , filter and power head we asked my local fish store if we bought the right stuff they said yes. Today while reading the instructions on how to maintain the filter I read that my filter should not be used on a tank that has sand. What kind of filter should I get then? The one I have know is a tetra whisper Power Filter for 30-60 gallon Aquariums (330 gph) bought at petsmart.

what do you want to keep in your tank. the only problem with sanf and the filter is that sometimes sand gets caught in the impeller and stops it. could happen to any low power filters, just clean it often and make sure it is running. but
give more info about what you want to keep

Get the skimmer and clean the filter often... the skimmer will do most of the real work and you likely won't need the filter.

i would not worry about the sand. however i dont think HOB filters r really useful in terms of filtration for a reef. its good for water circulation as long as u keep the filter clean.

Well what size tank do you have and how many and what type of fish do you have? I agree with reefman that a hang on the back type filter like you have is not the best filtration method for a salt/reef tank.

Get yourself the AquaC remora. What size is your tank? 30g? They have a nano skimmer for like 100-200$ for tanks 10-25g. its a hang on if u can fit it.

How about a canister filter a fluval? My tank is 48 g

If you have to use a HOT filter, put a foam sleeve on the intake. It will help keep the sand out.

You probably won't need the filter if you have a decent skimmer, I have a miserable skimmer, but with my live rock and fuge, my tank is doing well.

don't waste your money on a fluval. if your every planning on getting a canister get a Eheim. Got one on my cichlid tank and couldn;t be happier.

Take the filter back and read a few of the beginners threads here. No need for a Fluval OR a filter. What you should have is a protein skimmer and some kind of pre-filter/filter sock.
