Hello Everyone...StriperSniper here...I was referred to you guys from one of the shops here on Staten Island....i'm just starting to get into Saltwater Aquariums however I'm no stranger to the Freshwater variety...I currently have a 95 gallon with a wet/dry filter all ready to go however I'm trying to decide if I should go with Live rock or just a fish aquarium...I've heard both good and bad on both sides of the fence.

My first of of many questions is ...Can anybody give me a good resource for Saltwater fish/equiptment in the NYC/Staten Island/New Jersey area ?

As far as place for dry or wet goods. You found the place!! Just look in the for sale forum or place a want to buy ad. The guys here are very helpful. Just beware of a guy named Inkblue:joke:

Rock or bioballs? I would always go with rocks. Looks cool, great filtration, fish like to have privacy too, and the benefits go on and on.

As Herman said......FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) looks more natural, is eye pleasing and also adds better filtration.

Definitely check out the Classified & Vendor forums.
I haven't been to a pet store since I joined..

Welcome to MR. I agree with all the comments made thus far. You can find a lot of members who sell of "slightly loved" equipment as well as new stuff. And of course the advice and experience they can share is priceless.

However, if you are looking for other options I would recommend Premium Aquatics online (www.premiumaquatics.com) or Absolutely Fish in NJ (awesome LFS).

PS- I would definetly go with Live Rock. Makes for a more natural environment for your fish and is more astetically pleasing. I would also highly recommend a DSB (Deep Sand Bed), also more natural. Of couse, putting the beauty and nature thing aside, both the live rock and the DSB will also aide in the biological filtration of your tank. Just my tc!

Welcome to MR, Live rock over wet dry definately. Get a good protien skimmer and then see what else you can add equipment wise. An RO/DI water filter is a great investment too, don't use tapwater if you can help it it brings problems down the line.

Another vote for live rock. The benefits are far too numerous to ignore.
You're on the right track. Ask your questions and do your research BEFORE you buy anything. We can help save you lots of money and mistakes.

8 mo old newbie perspective..... start with 70 gal or larger tank. go deep or shallow sand bed (rather than bare bottom) and absolutely with live rock. use sump with best skimmer available. test arrangement to be sure skimmer is easily accessible.

never knew about corals before 8 mos ago and must say they're better than the fish. kinda like underwater gardening but these things aint plants. facsinating stuff.
