Why is it when I change the socks (while system is running) in my sump or turn when I turn off the entire system and restart it, my skimmer goes crazy and dispenses 5-15 gallons of water? Anyway to avoid this?

It used to happen to me, when I change my filter socks I now rinse them in Rodi water first. That stopped it, as for when I shut off my main pump I shut off my skimmer and after turning the pump back on I wait till the water in my sump goes back down to the original lvl and then turn the skimmer back on. Hope this helps. It works for me no more physco skimmer lol.

Thanks for the help, I will try ro did with the socks. As for turning off the system, I do the same... wait. My worry is if the power goes out and nobody is home, I know an apex or like system would help me control it from afar but... $$$.

I hear you, what I did was I got a reef octopus waste collector for the skimmer. If the power goes out and the skimmer goes nuts the waste collector shuts the skimmer off when it's full. It's not a big waste collector so my system doesn't lose much water.
