I am currently putting calcium, strotnium, and coralvite in my tank. It has been set up for 5 weeks now. I have live rock and sand, 2 clownfish . 48 gallon tank. Anything else I need? In your opinion.

Depends on what livestock you're planning on. For fish only, with regular water changes, you probably don't even need that. If you are planning on any corals, especially "hard" corals, I would add a two part (calcium and carbonate) solution daily.

Nemo, to find out what your tank needs, you should be testing your water parameters. If you are planning to keep corals and need to dose with 2 part, you should be testing calcium, alkalinity, and ph at the minimum. There are some good threads on the subject if you do a search.

good luck!!

it really all comes down to what you will put in your tank.If it will be a fish only tank ,then you will most likely not need any supplements,maybe a little vita-min and you'll be fine. good salt mixes like [reef crystals] and [instant ocean] contain pretty much all you need for keeping fish only.if you will house corals in your tank then do consider supplements,two parts liquids are ok but I, don't think you want to be dealing with it everyday. look into seachem reefbuilder for alka/reefadvantage calcium or kalkwasser which work great and are less of an everyday hassle. good luck

you dont need coralvite, thats just a piece of trash of a supplement. I use to use it.... just adds alot of garbage to the tank. strontium i think would be well enough replenished through weekly water changes. As far as dosing ca i think you should think into dosing the 2 part. Ca and Alk.... not just ca alone. What is your Ca and Mg levels?

In the top right hand corner of the screen - underneath the advertisment banner there is a list of options. Search is the 5th one from the left. :)

i would not add anything until you test the water.
ca=350-450 ppm dkh=7-12 mg=1300-1500
reef crystals test at 1200pmm at 1.025 if you mg levels are not up to par
you can dose part a/b until the cows come home.....been there

If you have no corals you do not need to add any of the above sup's, The anemone and the inverts are going to need iodine.

As a general rule, don't add anything you don't have a test kit for. If you're not testing for strontium or calcium, I wouldn't add it. If you don't test for something you're adding you have no way to know if you're adding too much or too little.

There is no need to dose strontium or iodine. You should be testing calcium and alkalinity on a regular basis and adding both on a regular basis(or as needed) either in the form of a 2-part system (B-ionic, C-balance, Randy Holmes-Farley's homemade) or by using limewater (kalkwasser) as your top off. Water changes will take care of the rest.

Although all of these answers are a little different, they all share a common thread. First, you absolutely have to figure out what livestock will be in the tank. If there are no heavy consumers of calcium and you will be diligent with water changes, you may not need any supplements. If there will, a 2-part calcium supplement will likely be necessary.

The second important point is: Don't randomly add stuff without testing for it.
