I know a fair share of people use skimmers as they seem to be the more popular of the two. I'm just looking for some info if anyone has tried one and then wound up with the other and vice versa. They look like they are fairly simple to DIY and am considering giving it a go.

All information would be greatly appreciated.

I would look into the ARID. Not DIY and might seem expensive but if you consider it can replace skimmer and reactors if sized up properly is not that bad at all and much easier on maintenance and mess.

I recently made a 24" high 4" wide skimmer from PVC which uses two wood airstones for bubbles. It works as judged from the amount of foam and sludge. Here is the reference

Paul B just built a macroalgae reactor. Check out his post. Someone else in the forum replicated Pax-Bellum's design but I can't remember who right now. It is recent though.
