As far as the powerheads, the 1200's are probably better, as Jay pointed out, because they have more appropriate flow for your situation. You want to try to mix up the flow (turbulence) as much as possible. The best way to do this is to point the powerheads to cross at some point, as Daceman has already pointed out. You also want to use the other powerhead and target it so that you can keep the water moving in as many areas as possible, to keep detritus (fish waste, food waste, etc) suspended and elminate dead spots (no flow).
When your budget and comfort level with your tank are ready, you should start looking into a good skimmer that you can employ in your tank. Use this time to start looking into the types of skimmers and what will work with your situation.
