Welcome to MR and please feel free to ask any questions.
I've been a member for nano-reef.com too. I like it here much better and don't even bother going to NR anymore.

Welcome to MR. I keep a nano as well. I like nano-reef, but almost everyone there is in CA, which makes it hard to post while remembering the time difference .

Read, read, and ask questions. There's lots of experience here. There is also a new book club forum here, and the fist book is Fenner's Contentious Marine Aquarist, which, if you've not had a chance to get, is an excellent book to start, and is appropriate for both large and nano reefs

BTW, the best way to get folks here to go easy on you is to not ask them to go easy on you, it just marks you as a big target for endless sarcasm. Check in with Alrha, he's our official sarcasm specialist:kidding: (no, really, that's who he is, but he usually gives you a few freebies before jumping in:biggrin: ).

You sure it's live sand and not dry sand? If it's live... it probably came out of a tank at the LFS.

If it's DRY... then yes it'll be fine to use... if it's Live I'd personally toss it unless your starting completely fresh and plan to wait out the cycling process as I'm sure much of it is now "dead" sand.

I believe he's talking about the "bagged" live sand that they sell in LFS's.
Caribsea (most likely).

I wouldn't trust putting that in my tank. Not for the time you had it alone....but for how long it was possibly sitting in the store as well.

Just get dry sand & take a cup of sand from a established tank & "seed" yours.

I didn't even think of the carib sea... good point sorry if I was being confusing.

I meant... is it live sand you got from the LFS that they bagged for you? or is it dry sand from say ESV or one of the other companies.

If it's Dry sand... go for it... if it's Carib sea or real live sand then I'd toss it.
