ok, so when are you suppose to add snails to a tank? i hear different things all the time like right when you start your tank to when you add the rock to waiting a month. do i add it when i first see algae? i guess the same question goes for all the other clean up stuff like hermits and cukes.

Generally, you add livestock when you see a purpose for it. Purpose can be a specific task you want it to accomplish (eat hair algea, eat something else.), or just mere desire to make the tank looks nicer or personal goal.

There is no specific time for adding live stock or clean up crew as long as the condition of the tank is such that a reasonable environment exists for they to survive. With these in mind, I feel you should be able to judge for yourself and decide when is the best time to add the snails/hermits/cukes.

I added my snails when my algae started to get to be more than a fine coating on the rocks, the clean up crew is doing nicely.
