i am putting rocks in the tank now after curing in a tub and one of them smells, its a big one about 10 pounds. what could it be and should i use the rock or get rid of it? i dont like wasting it, money is ok but the life wasted makes me feel bad. it smells like rotten eggs but i dont know where it is coming from.

Sounds like a dead sponge may be on it. Chicken liver sponges tend to come in-I believe they're brown in color, and really smell bad when they die. If you see any sponge on it, scrape/scrub it off (of course no soap porducts-just a wire brush). LR that has been exposed to the air for any length of time, with a sponge on it, and the sponge will die (hence the bad smell).

There can be other cuplrits, just check for any dead or decaying matter-and scrub it off.

i would just like to add that you would prolly want to do this in some extra salt water in a bucket or something so you can swish it and give it a good "rinse" when you're done.

Sounds like the rock might not be completely cured yet. I'd put that one back in the rock curing tank you had it in and give it a little more time. You're probably smelling a sponge or some other dead/dying stuff that's in the rock yet. You don't need to get rid of it, you just need to let it cure a little more.

Uncured rock usually smells pretty putrid. Like liquid said, let it cure for a while longer.

If you have a new tank without liverock in it just rinse it real well and place it in your tank. Kepp checking your water untill you have 0 ammonia and 0 Nitrates. Then you can start adding Livestock very slowly.
