Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has a calculator that will allow Me to raise the gravity of My water in a specified number of additions for topping off My tank.. I seem to remember a conversion table that would tell Me how
to do this..

for example...
if My level was at 1.032 and I wanted to bring it to 1.036 using 3 gallons of water this is the gravity needed in the additional top off water (say) 1.041 to bring the level to the desired 1.036

I hope that made sense... thanks... 8O

I don't understand why you would want to keep your sg at 1.036, but anyways. Top off water can simply be higher than the specific gravity of your tank, and gradually the level will be raised without using any conversion tables. You really DON'T want to raise your salinity too fast. Doing this gradually will be best.

You should be targeting something more around 1.025 for your specific gravity.

To raise it, as Unleashed suggested, you can add some salt to your top-off water for a while and track the SG in your system closely.

It is possible to calculate exact numbers but it's not really necessary...

Why do you want the SG so high, if you don't mind me asking? I agree with Chris in that 1.025 would be optimal for a reef aquarium.

I guess I should have used the actual specs I was trying to achieve.. My apologies.. I was only using those figures as an example **

right now Im about 1.023 and I would like to bring it to 1.025/6 with the smallest topoff possible.. so I should just go with water at 1.025/6 and top off with that slowly till I reach what Im seeking...*

Thanks in advance..

If you are raising SG via water changes, then the new water would have to be a higher SG than the tank water.

If you're using top-off to raise SG, any amount of salt in the top-off will work - doesn't really matter what the SG of the top-off is. Having more/less salt in the top-off will only effect the rate you'll change the SG of the main tank.

When I want to raise my specific gravity, I'll mix up makeup water that is the same SG of the tank. I then do a water change where I take out less water than I have to replace it. I then fill the tank with the makeup water higher than my usual fill line. As this water evaporates to my normal full level, it slowly increases the SG. I then top off with fresh water to my usual fill line. It doesn't change your SG that much, but it's good for fine tunig in cases where you've overskimmed or something like that.
