I'm getting closer now to buying some gear....you can't say I haven't taken my sweet time and done my research.
Thanks for answering all my noob questions folks!

As I have read all over the net, putting up a reef tank is an exercise in the fine art of balancing your desires for an all-out massively well-engineered system of complex super-bio-chemistry-mad-scientist-do-it-yourself-plumbing beautiful creation against the W.A.F.* 8)

So as much as I would like to have a remote sump, and plumbing through/under the walls, etc. I am going to contain my gear within the stand. So I sent off an email to all-glass to see exactly how much space is underneath their 18x172 modern series stand. I want to stuff the biggest sump and skimmer under there as I will possibly ever need for a 125 gal tank. Does anyone have this (or similarly sized) stand and what gear were you able to neatly tuck in there? Another W.A.F. consideration is noise. I need to keep this thing as quiet as possible. Does quiet sump/skimmer = more expensive sump/skimmer?

Hoping that I don't need to cash out my entire 401K for this

Hey, I know nothing about your stand, but I know about noise.

Don't try to push tons of flow through a sump. I have a 20 gal high sump with 750 gal/hr running through it, and there is just no way to quiet it.

If I were doing mine again I would put in the same setup with a smaller pump for return water from the sump, and then I would put in a closed loop for flow.

Just something to keep in mind

Here's the response from all-glass:

Mike,

The inside dimensions of our stand are as follows: 71 1/2 X 17 1/4 X 25 1/4 (LxWxH) Door Opening: 22 X 23. I hope this will help you out.

Sincerely,

Crystal

For those of you with under-stand sumps/skimmers, what are you running?

Under my 110 gal, the stand is 20X30X60 (5 feeter). I have the RO/DI, calcium reactor, water pump inside, but it does not have a sump, and I don't have enough room for a AquaLogic slimline chiller inside, and I have to use a HOB skimmer . Tight space there.... :(
