heres a link to the water quality in my area for you to peruse over if it helps answer my question. im a total newbie when it comes to R/O units and think that if i needed oner, that in the long run it would be easier, and cheaper, for me to buy and install an R/O unit. I've been looking at the Kent Bare Bones TFC system, but does this need to be permanently installed??.....if so, then what im looking for is an R/O unit that will be easy to connect/dis-connect as and when i need it and if you have any suggestions, PLEASE share them :)

Hi Simi and welcome to Reefs.org.

This place has excellent RO units and their customer service service is top notch. I would suggest you get RO/DI unit. The DI cartridge polishes off the water and usually yields a zero TDS (total disolved solids) reading. A TDS meter would be a good investment as well.

Simi,

The easiest thing to do is get one that fits onto a garden hose fitting.
Many faucets have this type of fitting available. In my current home, I attach it to the laundry tub faucet, and let the waste water drain into the tub.

If you have copper pipes, there are ways you can install it permanently. My house is older, with iron pipes, so this was not an option for me.

Both are valid options, but both depend on your situation in your home.

Regards.

I got the Kent Marine Hi-S Maxxima unit and it rocks. I hooked it up via garden hose adapter and when I'm done I just wrap it back up and set it to the side of the sink in my section of the kitchen counter dubbed"Fish Corner" =)

I would avoid the "bare bones" unit, it is basically a disposable since it is just the RO membrane. And it will clog up fast without the prefiltering of the complete units.

I also have the Kent unit described in 420's post and like it, but you have lots of options if you are into shopping around.

Simi,

Welcome aboard.

I have the 3-stage Dolphin from AquaFX. Nice system and great people to deal with. I have a garden hose screw on faucet in my basement, so I attached the unit to one of the beams near the basement slop sink. When done with the water, I roll the hoses up.

I previously had an American Pharmaceuticals Tap Water Purifier (TWP), so I connected the good water output line from the Dolphin into the TWP to get RO/DI water. I am very happy with the whole thing.

Lord,

I get a report from my water company annually. With the report in hand, I called AquaFX and told them what tanks I had. They recommended the 3-stage.

So, I guess it depends on:
1. your original water
2. what you want to keep
3. how much money you have.
