I asked because it's the skimmer that my LFS is peddling and I wanted to get your opinions/experiences on such a cheap protein skimmer. I'm leaning toward the Remora Pro Hang On, but entertaining cheaper and/or better alternatives. Any ideas/suggestions?

Heh, my LFS says that with one exception (which was not the Seaclone), all the skimmers that he's used work. Some are a bit more finicky than others.

He recommended a Prizm Pro, which he has on his show tank. On the basis of various internet equipment reviews (to be fair, they were comparing the Prizm regular with the Remora regular), I went with the Remora Pro (also bought from LFS, but for slightly more than the Prizm Pro).

Take this advice:

TAKE THAT SKIMMER...SHINE IT UP REAL NICE...KEEP ON SHINING IT...TAKE IT TO THE NEAREST WINDOW....TURN IT SIDEWAYS....AND KICK THAT SOM-OF-A-IATCH OUT THE WINDOW.

REPEAT THESE STEPS AS NECESSARY

8O :D

Never used it, but I've heard it called "Suckclone" on more than one occassion. CPR BakPak skimmers worked great for me, at about the same price.

420.. ROFL!! (or, as Hwarang likes to put it, roffle!)

In any event, SeaClones are infamous, that alone should tell you something. The AquaClear Remora has a pretty good rep, as does the CPR BakPak (I've heard fewer of the good reports on that one than the AquaClear).

I have one - you want it??

No, just kidding - I do have one, but I'd really mean to sell it to you - take my advice, save a little longer and buy something that works!

OK

"Seaclowns" do suck. Keep it though, you may want it some day for cycling LR or a Q Tank or whatever. (At least they come with a Maxi-Jet). There is also a mod you can do (with an wooden airstone) that makes these skimmers at least a bit useful. IMO the Remora Pro is the best HOT skimmer you can buy.

I have the 150 Seaclone on my 100 gallon for 6 months and have not had any problems with it. However I do have to adjust it sometimes. I had a Prism and it sucked. I would go with the Bakpak next.

i recently bought a remora and bakpak skimmers. both work really well, but the remora seems to produce a more "nasty" looking waste than the bakpak.

i used to have a seaclone skimmer and i hated it. it was more headache than it was worth. like you, my lfs told me it was a great skimmer. then i got a remora as a gift from some wonderful people on this board (guess they felt bad for me or just got sick of my complaining - lol) and it works great. i did keep the seaclone however just in case i want to use it for a smaller tank or for cycling as erik suggested.

My Seaclone kicks butt but I have to play with it about every two to three weeks. I have to drain the cup once a week. My nitrates have been Zero for several months now.
