I am curious to know quantities of live rock required for an aquarium for a live rock filter system. Some of the LFS have told me to use 2lb LR per Gal and some have told me 1lb per gal.

If anyone knows the difininitive answer please let me know..... Also when u say lb per gal are they referring to US gal or UK gal?

Hi Mace, and welcome to Reefs.org. :)

2 pounds per gallon is an old rule of thumb. These days most people would agree that 1 pound per gallon is more than adequate in most cases. However, Florida Aquacultured rock is more dense and heavier than indo pacific rock. Therefore it would take much less of fiji liverock than the aquacultured rock.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for that..... I had planned on using Fiji liverock as I heard it was the best!

The lb per gallon is that US or UK gal?

US.

One pound per gallon of Fiji would be a nice start. You could always add more if you are not happy with the aquascape. Remember to leave plenty of room for the corals to grow.
