ok, i currently have a Fowlr with only 5lbs. of live rock(just put it in to help the cycling)and about 4 in DSB, now im ready to start and live rock so maybe in the near future i can actually add coral.

ok my first question is i have a 55 g. 48" long and i wanna have only have of it with coral and LR, is this a good idea or should i just do the whole thing or does it make any difference at all?

My second question is if i can do only half how much live rock do i need, and if i have to do the whole thing how much would i need?

if you can answer those two then i have more but thats it for now thanxs in advance

There's a very rough rule of thumb for stocking with live rock, 1lb-2lbs/gallon. This is rough because different sources of live rock have different densities, so some may take up/displace a particular volume, whereas another is more like lead. As far as how much you ultimately stock your tank with in terms of volume, this issue would be the biggest determining factor in how well it will work out for you.

As Seamaiden pointed out, how much rock you'll want by weight will be largely dependent on how dense the rock is. What kind of rock did you have in mind?

IMO, if you're going to have a DSB you can get away with less rock as the sandbed will provide a lot of biological filtration.
