I'm a newbee (obviously) and I'm looking to get my test kits. I have a 75g started (now empty) & plan on using LR and a DSB. I am looking to get the "little things" before I fill it and start cycling.

Can anyone suggest a test kit to get? I know the obvious ones I need (pH, ammonia, nitrate/nitrite, etc) but what more do I need? Is any manufacture or style better than the others?

Should I try and get the automated equipment, or just go with the simple testing chemicals (tubes, drops, etc)

I like Salifert kits. Initially the kits you've mentioned should be fine - you might also want a phosphate kit too - although personally I find algae growth (or the lack thereof) to be enough of an indicator of phosphates. An alkilinity kit would be a good idea, and down-the-road if you're interested in stony corals you'll want to monitor calcium as well.

Personally, I think some gadgets are worth it for the convenience and time savings. I have a temp monitor running continously on my tank. I also use a handheld pH/temp meter to do quick checks periodically. A refractometer is also a good idea for monitoring specific gravity, although a glass hydrometer (cheaper) will do. Personally I'd check the hydrometer against a refractometer though (your LFS or a local reefer might be able to help you out there...).

For cycling a new tank, the Saltwater Master kit is cheap and works OK. I use Salifert kits for more detailed testing of a reef tank, but the SM kit is fine for getting started and for a fish-only tank.
