I have heard that a good rule of thumb is 5w per gallon.

So: 12 gallon tank x5 watts = 60 watt heater needed.

I would say a 50 watt heater should suffice. I try to keep my tank temperature between 76-78 degrees. Anywhere between 75 degrees and 80 degrees is pretty much ok as long as whatever temp you decide it should be STABLE. If the temp swings too much your tank will be stressed and you can end up having problems, ie ich, fish loss, etc.

Hehe. Your battle will likely go the other way. Soon you'll be wondering how to keep it cool. I put a heater in the back end of my Nanocube mostly out of habit. I unplugged it after I realized how pointless it was. The lights would boil my tank w/o the cooling fans.

I think a 50w heater will be fine. The temp depends on where you live, and what time of year it is, along with the lights, but in general the tank will run fairly hot. I have a 50w heater in mine set at 78, and most of the time the temp is 80-82 when i dont run a fan. However, when I leave the window open accidentally in the late afternoon or evening the temp sometimes drops to 75 or so. But your tank probably isnt by a window and won't have this problem
btw, my tank is still cycling so this temp variation isn't hurting anything. Once the cycle is over, i will try to maintain 78 degrees with the heater, light cycle, and fan

Meloco your right on buddy.

Edwin, they are reffering to the use of MH's (Metal Halides) which can get really hot. We have to use open canopies and integrate the use fans into our lighting to keep the temperature from going out the roof. In our cases, we still use heaters but they rarely kick in unless its a really cold night. During the day our lighting becomes the heaters 8)

What kind of lighting do you have? What kind of bulbs?
