Double ended (DE) lamps are typically more powerful and efficient than the single ended (SE)lamps.
DE are also alot more expensive, as you might guess.
Note that Iwasaki bulbs are not made in DE form. These bulbs have been shown to give the best coral growth in independent tests. Problem is, many folks find them too yellow. I don't have a problem w/ the color. If you want Iwasakis (which are relatively cheap bulbs that last at least a couple of years) then you're limited to SE.
One does get good growth with other bulbs, don't get me wrong. Just not the same as Iwasakis.
If money isn't an object, and a bluish color is important, you probably will want to go DE.

beware of UV being alot higher from my understanding of DE..Might wanna do more research..might also need a special UV filter for a splash guard so your corals dont get "sun burned"! thats what will literally happen to them...

SE lamps have the outer glass envelope to curb their UV output, whereas the DE pendents come with the UV shields installed, so either way there's no need to sweat the UV thing IMO. I've never had a UV problem using DEs.

DE setups generally do have higher output in similar wattages - apparently (according to the work of folks like Sanjay Joshi, Richard Harker, etc.) because of the small, consistent lamp geometry which allows for more efficient lamp & reflector performance.

DE setups are more pricey, but the higher output/efficiency and more compact installation is appealing to some.

I like SE style, as I have found more variety in color temps., more manufacturers, and better prices. If space is at a premiun, DE is better, but if space is not an issue SE is da way IMO.
