I am finally pulling out all the pieces and parts to set up my tank again. I have read much on skimmers and there seems to be a consensus on one particular one not being all that good.....do I have that one? :(

It is an Aquarium Systems SeaClone.

If so should I junk it and buy a new one? My tank is a 58G and I plan on setting it up as a reef tank. I will have MH + VHO lights. I have an RO/DI filter and I plan on having a sump/refugium (still in planning stages).

Thoughts?

I think they work pretty good on tanks 30 gallon and smaller other than that they make great bongs

SeaClone is a great skimmer for tank 5 gal or smaller. I don't know how you can even get it to work for 30 gal without modification... :P

Thanks for the feedback. So now that I need to get a different skimmer what are everyone's thoughts on best ones? I've read that AquaC is good, yes?

AquaC, MRC, ER and Geo all make nice skimmers. I really don't know any one that has not been happy with any of those.

Get a GOOD skimmer this time. I have a remora aqua c and I dont really care for it. Its on a 43 gal and it cant produce 1 cup of skimmate in 2 weeks. Personally I would go with an in sump version, maybe the aqua c 180 or something. I think with skimmers bigger is always better.

Modify your seaclone.I did and now it really kicks ass! Heres what to do:
first pull out the return tube inside the skimmer (its the one that is like 6 or 7 inchs long.cut it down to approx. 2 to 2 1/2 inch's. then run an airpump with a wooden airstone, drop the airstone in the skimmer, thats it. Those 2 things increased the performance by at least 100%, Im talkin about 1 full cup of dry foamy dark green skimate every 2 to 3 days, thats what the modification has done for me!If you want to, try it,if not go spend more money on a better one,I am very happy with it now!!
Also I was told that if you put a "T" on it .The air regulator that comes with is not sufficent to set it accuratly,The T allows for more precise control of the air intake, thats the next thing im going to do.I HOPE THIS HELPS.

PS-AND TO HELL WITH ANYONE WHO DISAGREES  ,MY MODIFIED SEACLONE IS NOW A TOP RATE ASSKICKER!!

I have a seaclone 100 on my 20 gallon tank and for that, it does just fine. Depending on whether or not Im feeling "into" my tank, and rearranging or changing currents it puts out enough skimmate for me.

My LFS has these in all their tanks and while their tanks are heavily populated, they produce a great mass of black skimmate while mine produces a smaller ammount. If I change the current in my tank, then I get a mass of black skimmate, if I feed a raw jumbo shrimp to my tanks inhabitants, I get a mass of clearwater skimmate.

But just looking at the cup right now I have it about 3/4 full of a dark tea mixture of skimmate because I just changed the current in the tank about 2 hours ago.

If you want, go buy one of the more expensive skimmers, but as for me on this 20 gallon tank, the seaclone 100 does just fine.
