New Reef setup questions, please help! :) 73 Gallon

Noise: search on the site, and you will find tons of tricks on shuting down the noise problem on overflow. Most of the solution is more of an art than science....
Canister: Don't need it unless you have a particular problem that need it, since as sand particles that never seem to settle out.
Skimmer: some need a "break-in" period. B e patience. If there is nothing for it to skim out, it just won't give you much foam. I used to jokingly suggest people to pour in a beaten egg or two to get the skimmer working...
Bubble: You may need to find out what is the maximum amount of water the sump can hold without overlfowing when the power is out. Or you may need to thottle down the Mag a little by putting a ball valve between the pump and the return.... it depends on the specifics.

I had my Ehiem not running... off but still hooked up in the tank.. I disconnected it tonight and it STUNK! BAD! like really bad water smell... why? Could that have been hurting my tank.. I have very high phosphates and I am having a hard time lowering them...
