My 20 gallon aquarium is well established, its been running for close to 2 years with things that have been changed from time to time, i want to figure out how to get all my stats in order without getting a larger system right now.
I have 3 fish, a couple of LTA's, shrooms, green star polyps, 20lbs LR, 3-4in sand bed. Coralife PC, two hang on filters. Cant keep nitrates down for very long, want to get ph from 8.1 up to 8.3- i havent been able to keep xenia (they shrivel and die in about 24hours) Im thinking of making a refug-sump with alot of macro below in another 20gal and setup a cheap MH lighting rig to see what i think of MH----I will get a bigger setup but for now can someone tell me what they think to get the 0-0-0-0's on my current setup. Ive also thought of making a denitrator that ive seen in DIY stuff with the coiled tubing inside a PVC w/bioballs at slow return drip rate to try solving this problem....need some ideas please

I found that if you clean your hang on filters every week or 10 days, they will keep your nitrates at 0. I have a canister and hang on filter and as long as they are kept rinsed out - all the filth in the tank stays near zero. It may be something else but I believe this helps my tanks.

I have a "skilter" and its often not turned on for skimming because its quite loud. It's always operating as a filter....And when i do have it skimming it does not work well, i have in the past tried to increase its potential with airstones and aux. airpump's...
