I am trying to set up a light on my 29gal. I ve been told that Iwasaki bulbs run great on MV ballasts. I would like to use a 175 because of cost and heat issues. However I cant seem to find an existance of a 175 watt.

Does this bulb not exist??? I just want to be absolutely sure before I change my entire plan.

Yeah, I think they only make it for 150W... kind of difficult, relatively, to find the right ballast there... :(

Iwaskai makes a 150 watt Medium base lamp, but I'm not sure what ballast it requires - not sure if it fires on a MV ballast like their larger Mogul base lamps or not.

FWIW, a double-ended 150 watt halide setup with an electronic ballast would be a very energy efficient way to light a tank that size, although not the cheapest to setup. You'd also have more lamp options.

So now that my plans have been trashed, back to the drawing board.

I have seen bulbs that have slightly different wattages than the ballast it runs off of.

Examples;
The 430 son agro HPS runs on a 400 HPsS ballast. It does not run to capacity unless you add a different capacitor but it does work.

The 360 Ultra Ace HPS runs on a 400 MH ballast. Mind you, for this situation it might be entirely different because this is a conversion bulb. There is also a 940watt version of this bulb.

Now here is the question. Would a 150 watt medium base Iwasaki run on the 175 MV ballast?

Also, yesterday I was at the book store and I saw in a book a reef aquarium running with mercury vapor bulbs. I know the spectrum isn't very good but compared to my single cool white 20watt flor. it has to be better. Aswell as that cost issue again. I am very limited in money so cheap alternatives are always welcome. I am again refering to the 175 watt MV kits that they have at home depot. Is it at all worth it to go with this type of lighting? This would also be supplemented with 40watts of actinic.
