www.1000b.com has a 175watt iwasaki but it is only 4000k. They also have a mercury vapor that is 6800k. HMMMMMM.... Curious....

Are the use of MV's in the reef aquarium worth anything. I know the spectrum isn't as good but would 40watts of actinic and a 175 MV over a 29gal be okay for a simple reef?

Regarding the use of MV bulb... I am a bit worry about the spectrum even if the color temperature is 6800K.... can't see the web site, but mercury have very specific spectral peaks, and most of them will not be "cover up" with actinic. Don't remember how good is MV for photosynethic (I think hydroponics people use them....), but for color, I am pretty sure it is not going to be pretty.

250W is not that much more than 175W that you want, so I feel if you can make use of it, then a 250W Iwasaki MH maybe better than a MV...

Sorry.... www.1000bulbs.com

Some people do use MV's for growing plants, but plants need much more in the blue and red ranges where the mv peaks in the yellow and green range. I guess I am answering my own question. I am just trying to know as much about the use of lighting in aquaria as possible. I used to work in the indoor horticultural industry and understand much about lighting in this respect. However as similar as aquaria and plants needs are in regards to lighting, reef systems requirments are much more specific.

For now I think the plan is hunting down a 250 MH ballast and Iwasaki 6500K to match. Unfortunetly this wont be easy in Puerto Rico where everthing seems to be a little more difficult to find and a little more expensive.

Does any of the regular reef hardware vendors be able to ship it down to PR for a reasonable cost?

I have not as yet been able to find one that is worth while. The extra shipping charges are outrageous. Next week I am going to see what is available here at some commercial electric supply places and then calculate the difference. Where are some of the on-line hot spots for aquarium lighting. I was told about marine depot and their ballast prices seemed high. It seems that all the aquarium supply sites haves higher prices for hardware then a lighting only site. Makes sense but it is difficult finding that specific bulb, the 250 6500K EYE. Any ideas on where to continue the hunt.

PS So far I found it for 59.00 plus shipping. I cant remember the cost of shipping. I'll get back to you.

I looked, and it looks alright. FWIW, I were able to find a similar 400W ballast locally for $20. I guess I was lucky, but as a starving student at that time, I need all the luck I needed. BTW, I used an old computer case to house the ballast, works pretty well.

Did you ever check your local lighting/electric supply store? You know, the same place that electric contractors go to? they often carry the ballast, and it can be cheaper if the shipping charge is excessive to PR from the online vendor. Good luck.

I plan on checking tommorrow. Nothing is open on the weekend in PR. 20 bucks wow. I hope I am that lucky. For cases I find that The small traditional red tool boxes work well. For less than ten dollars you can get one that fits 2 250 's. Easy to mount fans and remotes plugins as well.
