I am at a total loss. My yellow polyps are dieing back and I don't know what to do. I changed tanks and lights and the polyps exploded and took over three rocks realllllllll fast. Now the same polyps are dieing back and what was once a couple of hundred polyps is not a couple of polyps. My water is OK. Ph 8.2, Sal 1.025, KH = 11, Calc = 330. The calc is on its way up via dosing and reef building salt used in water changes. The rest is right where I am aiming for. The polyps are turning grey and appear to just rot away. I thought that maybe some of the inhabitants were killing them, but I never see anything on them. Currently there is just a coral banded and a peppermint shrimp. Then I also have a tang, firefish, and clown. Other than that the tank is empty.

Dood i had the same problem..the only kind of polyps that i cant keep alive..i have some now had them for a few months most of them died off but a few..i thought they were suppose to be hardy? anyways mine are just now starting to spread...your Ca isnt the problem though, even though you need to up it for ishes and grins i dont believe that is your problem..i keep my Ca around 400-450 and that hasnt helped them..i have some SPS,LPS, softies and polyps and those seem to be the toughest to keep thriving..you say you changed your lights..that might be the problem, maybe?? hopefully they'll come back

I suspect something more to them than what has been said? Maybe they are sensitive to something that is unknown at this point. Mine are doing the same thing, not as easy as we have been led to believe?

yeah, i was also under the impression they were low light and easy and mine have been receding too. not only that, they've lost their beuatiful yellow color and are now sort of dull yellow with a hint of brown. this is even after i switched lighting to 70w mh at 6 inch depth for a month.

LFS says the yellow are the least hardy of the lot, and directed me away from them.

He said "some people just have good luck with them, but I alway seem to kill 'em."

I am working on the pics. My calc is low but I am working it back up. Sorry I have been away for a while. Damn college always getting in the way of hobbies.

I spot feed my yellow polyps twice a week. They seem to really chomp down, but my stupid pepermint shrimp keeps taking some of the food. I will rid myself of this nusiance once I move. The polyps are starting to come back a little. The chemicals are pretty much the same and I am not doing anything differently. My green stars that are on the same rock are doing great and already killed some pulsing xenia I had by stangling it out. Now I am getting some weird white encrusting sponge. Pics will follow soon. I am finally going to break down and buy my own digi.

If you are successfully keeping SPS then your water may be too clean for the polyps. I know it sounds weird, but many of those polyps and zoos are found in nutrient rich lagoons. I think thats why people have problems with elegance etc too, we keep our tanks too clean now :D Ever read a thread where someone had a huge hair algae outbreak, but thier LPS were looking HUGE?
