I need to buy a perforated pipe 1-1/2" diameter to place in my return from the overflow box. Snails and even small fish are getting into my drain & I find them in the sump. I am trying to prevent a disaster with snails clogging the return. I have a one inch diameter pipe that came with my Oceanics I need a one & a half inch diameter for my setup... Any suggestion about where to get such a pipe & any other ideas about how to prevent snails from clogging the returns/drains. I know I can drill a hole buch of holes in a PVC pipe...

I think small critters getting in your overflow and sump are just a way of life. I'd use a standpipe if you are going to go to the trouble. The critters have to really want to get in that pipe to be sucked to the sump.

I am moving a lot of water & my overflow box is actually full of water adding a sponge would be risky plus cleaning sponges is not my thing. I am in effect wanting to use a standpipe with lots of holes so it want impact significantly the level of water in the overflow box. Thanks for your input. Anyone knows if & where I can get a perforated 1-1/2 inch diam pipe as noted above. Thanks again for any and all input.

What if you just drilled in your own holes? Not too big of a deal, no? ...just a thought.

Check out a durso (I think I spelled it right) I know on the net you can get a plan on how to construct one. Not sure of the site but I will try and find out.

I made mine on a table saw, but you can do the same thing with a hack saw. Lots of 'slices'.

Looks neat, Righty. But one cut too deep, and you will be calling names..., no big deal, I guess, just a short piece of PVC.

Yeah you gotta be a little careful! I have also added an encap on the bottom.

That is what I am using on my close loop system. But, I am pulling a lot of flow through them (2 @~900g/h each). I am thinking of moving toward Righty's solution to spead the suction over a larger area.

I may replace the 'strainer' in the pic with one that goes all the way to the bottom of the overflow. That way, there is more surface area to take up the slack in case part of the 'stariner' gets clogged.

Osama, in the long run, snail will eventually end up in your sump, sucked up by the return pump. Unless you can prevent microscopic snail larvae from entering your sump.

I think the idea is a large adult snail won't get caught in his stand pipe tube and cause a massive flood...

Thanks to All; I do know the site for Dorso pipe thanks. I think I will make my own with slits on my table saw unless I find the comercial pipe I am looking for.

Hey be careful there, wouldn't do for you to lose a finger

always clamp down round pieces when running them across a spinning blade

wanna see my mutilated finger???

/safety rant off

You can take some plastic gutter guard and cover the top of the overflow so nothing can crawl or swim in there. :)
