Hi

I have a few fish in my tank and I none of them show any signs of parasites. I have purchased a yellow tang from a LFS and before adding it to my tank I examined him carefully (no QT available yet). After about 2 weeks I noticed a white spot about 1/8" in diameter near his butt. Looks like an area that has almost been bleached out. Hes now rubbing agains the glass and darting around. Usually Ich is smaller in size then this, right? I was curious if it was simply an injury. Since my tank is only a 40 its a bit tight for him to move around and he might have scraped himself on the rocks, Hopefully. I have read about ich but what other parasite could this be if not a simple injury? What treatments can be done within the tank to help prevent the spread? The more natural the better, I dont like adding chemicals. for Inverts I have a Coral banded shrimp, peppermint shrimp, purple tip anenome, yellow ployps, live rock. Im currently waiting to add corals, there's a local frag meet and I want to buy from there.
ALL my tests are acceptable:
amonia: 0
nitirte: 0
nitrate: 0
phosphates: 1
calcium : 450 This spiked a bit high a week or so ago to 550/600
salinity: .24
alk: 9.5

I'm guessing it's an external bacteria infection, but that's just a guess. Ich is usually symptomic with lots of tiny white spots. If it is bacterial in origin, unfortunately the only solution is to remove the fish to a quarentine tank and administer gram-negative antibiotics. It's hard to diagnose these problems. Pictures may help.

i read someware that the yellow tang has a kind of spine at the end of his boddy that he can use as protection i wonder if that is what you are seeing?

f.y.i..........i learned an interesting fact about these fish.....if you put some romain lettuce in the tank they go crazy for it!!

If the white spot is in both sides, then it is a spine that is his protection. He will try and stab other fish with it if he feels threatened. Since he is new to the tank, we will run into the glass and feel threatened thus the act of him rubbing against the glass. If you put another yellow tang in the tank, he will also go after that fish as yellow tangs are territorial. If you want multiple yellow tangs in one tank, you will need to put them all in at the same time and then they will be buddies.

I hope this helps out. Bob
