I am looking to setup a 65 or 75 gallon reef in the next month or so. My roommate is running a 90 gal. right now with a euroreef skimmer in the sump but no refugium. Its doing good but i would like the extra filtration and water volume added with a refugium. Any suggestions on a good setup thats not too difficult and extensive to put together.

A refugium can be designed very cheaply. A regular container of water (such as a tank) with some DIY baffles inside to keep the sand from coming out, and a cheap light source is all you need. Here's a diagram of a common refugium set-up I drew (hopefully it gives you an idea).

thanks, that helps a lot. i wasn't totally sure on how the refugium tied into the sump but that clears up a lot.

Yes im gonna use an old "Tidy Cats" litter container (trust me it will be thoroughly washed out) for mine...you dont necessarily need an aquarium..like Len said a "container" a bucket would work...
