I am looking to add a powerhead to increase circulation in my 45g tank. I am still in the beginning cycling of the tank and only have live rock and some damsels. could someone give me an initiation into what sort of brand(s) and/or sizes i should be looking at ? I plan on going reef, but I want to get the hang of keeping more tolerant things alive before i spend my grad school stipends on expensive things.

thanks

Vertikul19,

Are you planning on using a wavemaker now or in the near future? If so, I'd recommend Maxijet powerheads as they hold up well to the constant on/off cycling with the wavemaker.

If you're just going to run them continuously I don't think the brand is really critical (although I still prefer Maxijets and dislike RIOs).

BTW - welcome to Reefs.Org!...

Yup.. what Chris said... If this were to be used for a return, or something more critical, then get the best.

In case it wasn't mentioned

:P

A lot of old literature and LFS still suggest people cycle their tank with fish. What romunov was probably trying to say is that this is an outdated method that some regard as inhumane. But I don't understand the idea of boycotting hobbyists that were given inaccurate information; That's like shooting the messenger ;)

Oh, another vote for Maxijets. Very good (and affordable) brand. Avoid Rios like the plague and you'll be okay :)

Yea i did not know cycling with fish was harmful to the fish. I have 3 little yellow tailed damsels and they seem to enjoy the large tank all to themselves quite well. Although i know this is going to be a problem with such aggresive fish down the road.

thanks for all the help!
