1. Your brain may be expelling waste (in which case it stays rather small until finished) = hopefully the most likely answer as it is perfectly normal...Have you noticed if it is shrunken all the time? Any conditions changed? A tried and true method...try taking some food (chopped up clam, mussel,or frozen food, etc) and squirt it/aim at one the brain's mouths and see what happens...

2. As far as the microbubbles your skimmer is no longer producing...what brand of skimmer? Any changing conditions in your tank? Is it still producing skimmate? etc.. etc..

Thanks!

John

i noticed it for 2 days, when the lights have been on a good portion of the time it is small, it used to be big all the time with the lights on.

as far as the skimmer it is a precision marine, it is not making the tiny air bubbles at the bottom, i don't get it

I'm also not an expert, but I have spent a lot of time observing all the corals in my tank. :)

I've noticed just about every one of them puffs up more or less depending on ... what exactly? Who knows? Mushrooms, brains, all kinds of corals ... maybe it's their mood or something. :) Generally, bigger and puffier seems happy. There are lots of reasons why your corals might expand or contract. Puffing up is probably swelling with water, preparing to expel something (waste or milt) ... or perhaps it's just happy that way. Imagine how you feel when you stretch out on a bed in the sunbeam. Maybe the coral is doing the same, going "ahhhhhh yea" hehe.

I would only worry if the coral was shriveled most or all of the time. Keep an eye on it and let us know.

thanks, i agree with your thoughts, i am also new at this and learning that a change for a day or 2 in a coral, skimmer etc. seems to work itself out, another words you cannot panic all the time
