Ok - after looking at this. I think I am going to rinse my southdown sand before adding it to the tank. It's sooo cloudy! It's been 7 days and there has been sand all over this rock. the rock doesnt smell or anything but ocean. I saw pods hanging on the glass. Here are some pics of the rock after 7 days, anyone care to let me know how it looks? I know it looks horrible...not sure if its alive still or not. This is a learning experience for me, so I can take criticism. Thanks everyone!

P.S. sorry for the large pic, I didnt know how to resize, anyone who can tell me how, I would be grateful. Thanks

Your live rock looks fine. Try to scrape off all the slimmy stough. Keep doing those water changes and it will turn out great.

Where'd you get it? The rock doesn't have much coraline (but i see some green coraline) or living attached thingys. Can you see mini featherdusters, any sponges or worms etc when it's in the water? Also, I would stop lifting it out of the water for pix :)

Looks like it's well cured though, and even if the LR doesn't have a lot of hitchhikers on it, it's still good to go. Bacteria and whatnot.

Yes, it did. But it looks like they are dead...see the smooth patches thru out the rock ? :(

they'll come back. Once your tank cycles and things get stable you'll start adding the Kalk. That and lighting will bring the CA back.

you're doing fine. the little feather dusters will come back too, but you do need to quit playing with it and leave it alone

Don't worry, your rock looks good. The lifting out of the water harms any sponges you might have coming back.

That looks better than most of the liverock available to me locally, I especially love the bivalve crustracians, at least I think I see a few clams, or what nots.

The calc algae will eventually grow and heck you only need a spec of it to regrow your tank to a nice purple if you have the right water conditions to begin with.

Life that we really want to sustain life in our tanks can't really be seen with the naked eye, with a couple exceptions, so dunk that rock back in water and keep it there and let the bacteria grow and grow. The parts of life that we "like" to see, can surely be added over time with enough money and or time.

Goodluck,

thanks to those who've had something positive and encouraging words to say to a first time reefer. I appreciate it. Well it's my first rock so I expected criticism but not childish ridicule.

I am sorry and I take back the comment, lesson learned as there is no reason to be simply rude. (I dont want to get a ban from this site, sometimes I just have too much fun)
