The top of my 75 gallon is open to the world... and my MH lights that hang from the ceiling.

The sand bed is...maybe 4" deep in the main tank and there is a 10 Gallon refugium with at least 6" of sand. I have a skimmer on this 90 gallons of tank area rated for 100 gallons of water and plenty of LR.

I have been running a fluval 204 in the sump to filter out sand bits or whatever "floaties" or nuggets come along.

It seems no one else does this... Will my skimmer, rock, and sand really take care of all my filtration needs for this setup?

Im a bit hesitant to remove this small cannister but I REALLY want to be able to use it for a 10 Gal Nano

Are you using a micron bag on your return lines to the sump? A 200 micron bag works well. You can place the carbon or media in bags in front of the sump outflow instead of the fluval.

no but my skimmer runs through a foam sort of bubble diffuser before returning, and my sump return has a foam pre-filter on it.

I will look into the bags right away. that might also solve my mass bubbles on my return issues too.
