I'm still new to salt and need to know what fish eat little crabs, snails and cleaner shrimp? Right now the only one that I have that I think eats them is a spotted hawk. But I was thinking on getting a FOLR tank and wanted to know what not to get. How about triggers?

The trigger I had (huma huma) ate anything and everything

The list of things he ate in my tank was extensive, but here are a couple that stood out

Hermit crab
Arrow crab
small starfish
Blue damsel
Feather duster

I think that is enough examples

hehe

Manny of the wrasse family will eat crabs and shrimp. Hawks will also. Triggers are really bad. Some snappers, groupers and grunts will also.

I've had a Humu Humu (Picasso) Trigger, Niger Trigger, and Spotted Hawkfish. Out of those 3, the Spotted Hawk was the only one who ate one of my clean up crew members.

Agreed. I have a Niger Trigger and a Clown Trigger. I've raised my Clown since the fella was the size of a quarter(now he's about 7") and of the 2, he's the worst offender. My Niger doesn't appear to be that bad actually....but jeez...my Clown is a pig...LOL!

I have a Hawk and a Niger Trigger that don't bother my Coral Banded Shrimp. My hermit population is very small so I don't see them very often but I am sure there are still some in there. My fish don't bother my Turbos or my Conch. I have had my Thorny Star for more than a year now. I highly recommend you do more reading before puchasing any fish or inverts.

Thanks for all the reply's. to the people that have thease fish what do you do for clean up crew? Go without or just throw them in there knowing that they'll get eaten? Wouldn't the system be more stable with some clean up crew? I read tons, but haven't seen this subject before. Do you know a good place to go and read up on this?

billyzbear,

response to your question about the safety of the clean-up crew:

luckily, my niger trigger isn't a bad fish and eats everything that it can get a hold of. however, you do worry sometimes that crabs or snails will start disappearing. i say just throw some in there and not worry about it.

there's a nice message in this forum concerning what species are good clean up crew members..

Another thing on snails, i recently found out that if they get turned over on their backs they can't flip over so they die.Explained a lot of death we were having!!

This is only true of certain snail species - not all. Also, most species of hermits tend to harass snails which is why I don't have any in my tank. If you have hermits that could explain some of the mysterious snail deaths (especially if they're getting stuck on their backs - that's like ringing the hermit dinner bell...LOL!).

Well, I put some hermit craps in there and so far the spotted hawk hasn't eaten any but he does watch them. He didn't give them much of a welcome when I put the hermits in, he sat right on top them until I scared him away. For some reason my tang is acting very wierd. He's darting around and not sure if he is trying to knock them off the rock or is trying to rub himself against the rock. He doesn't have any spots or anything on him and I just did a 1/4 water change. The rock is next to his lettuce so maybe it's his area. The other fish seem fine but scared from the tang. One of the clowns decided to dig a hole or maybe its a nest.
I was thinking on getting a mini brittle star, some snails and a cleaner shrimp. Would the hawk go after one of these?
