ok, i really have been wanting to setup a fuge using a overflow and return pump for a long time now, but what has kept me from it is worries of a. overflow clogging and tank overflowing, or b. pump failing/ fuge overflowing, i have wood floors that absorb water like a sponge and it would destroy my floor if something like this would happen is there any safe way to make sure that during a power outage or anything neither of these things would happen?

From the description, it sounds more like a sump than a fug...

Anyway, there are many ways to minimize the problem. One of my tank is setup so that if the overflow clogs, it just leave behind a dried sump, instead of overflowed tank. If the pump lose power, or went dead, the sump won't overflow because it (sump or fug) has the capacity to hold all the overflowed water from the tank.

i want it for keeping sea lettuce and another type of macro algae... ive heard something about these valves that will only flow one way to stop the pump from siphoning back if it goes off or fails... so to not overflow the tank dont you ahve to fill it up a few inches from the top? i did it this way before, but id really like to be able to fill up my tank all the way.

put a float valve that will kill the power to the pumps if the water level in the sump/fuge gets too low....

You confused me there... :?

The valve that you heard is called check valve. There are other options, such as antisiphon valve, airhole above water line, as well as simply not totally submerge the return line below the water line.

My experience is that check valves are another piece of equipment that can fail. I had my sump overflow because the ball inside the valve accumulated a small amount of algae. The algae made it not seat properly and water was slowly siphoned into the sump. I think it is best to set your return so that it sucks air before overflowing the sump.

so just make the overflow get water off the VERY top of the tank... so how do you make sure the return pump in the Fuge doesnt overfill the aquarium
