Hi all,

My new 90 gallon tank is ready for me to pick up, so I decided to set up my quarantine tank today. I read in one of my books (I am a Saltwater Rookie) that I should put LR in it.

My question is, will meds in the quarantine tank kill the beneficial cultures on the LR? and if not how much LR should I put in a 10 gal. Do I need the 1 pound per gal? or can I get away with less being that it is just a quarantine tank.

Hopefully I wont need any meds, but from my freshwater days I know better than to count on it.

In a quarantine tank, or hospital tank, for that matter I would rather have items in it that fish can hide in and can be thoroughly cleaned.(like large PVC pipes) I wouldn't recommend LR. Which book recommends LR?
If you ever add copper to a tank with LR in it, it's probably going to render the LR useless for a reef tank in the future.

After re-reading the paragraph, I now realize the purpose of the live rock was to seed the sponge filter. So now that I understand this, won't the copper have the same effect on the sponge filter? How do you keep a quarantine tank in stable condition while using meds? I guess its the typical water changes. I do have assorted PVC pipe in there for hiding.

Thanks

a quarentine tank relies more one water changes than anything else. usually you'll go with smaller more frequent changes than you would in your display tank. I agree, PVC is a wonderful choice for hiding areas.

on a side note, might wanna change your screen name..... after you get experienced with the hobby and fill up your future 180gal. reef, might be kinda silly to have the screen name "WannaBeReefer" :P

I thought about the screen name lol, but right now I am a wannabe and proud of it! :) I'm just happy I found a place that can help transform me. The tranformation will be a long process so I figured, why not...I'll be a wannabe for a while... 8O

Thanks!

Quarantine is different from hospital, it doesn't necessarily mean that the animals held within will be medicated. Now, it's going to be confusing, because lots of folks, yours truly included, trade off these terms. However, the only purpose of quarantine (aka q/t, et al) is to ensure the animals going into that nice new display are disease-free. Once you have to treat, it becomes a hospital tank.

So, during quarantine a sponge filter is great, you NEED nitrification if at all possible. During medication, it's a moot point to have a biological filter of any sort, because antibiotics and the like are indiscriminate. Make sense?

P.S. To change your screen name you must offer a box of one dozen Krispy Kreme donuts to Len AND to Shane.. I think Chucker's on a diet.
