Having a problem with green hair algae on LR and in the sand bed. Just noticed two small patches where the algae looks lite brown. Will do a water change tomorrow. Green algae was a problem a few weeks back but I attributed it to overfeeding. 37 gal tank w/ 2 sm. perc, 1 lawnmower blenny (added 2 weeks ago) and purple dotyback and 2 emerald crabs. I had been feeding pellets (2-3 sm. pinches) and a 1/4 cube of brine in the evening daily. About 10 days ago I cut back to 1 item daily. I wonder if I'm still overfeeding. Nitrates and Phosphate are fine so I must be overfeeding right?????

How old is your tank? It's normal to go through several different algae blooms the first few months.

Off the subject, are you in orthopedics?

I would say your feeding about right. Like I said you'll have algae problem for the first few months. It would probably be a good idea to get some snails and hermits to help control your algae blooms some. That's what I did more than a year ago. I got mine from GARF.

I work for Shriners Childrens Hospital - Houston Unit as an OTC(Orthopedic Technologist Certified).

As to what an OTC (Orthopedic Technologist Certified) does, the easiest way I can explain it would be to say that I'm a nurse type person that has specialized in orthopedics. The only thing we really can't do is start IVs and change bed pans. HeHeHe. If you really want to know more in detail what it is we do, I suggest you go to the NAOT (National Association of Orthopedic Technologist) website (which is the organization I belong too) and to the NBCOT (National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologist) website.

Don't worry about the hair algae. Worry about your consistency of tank maintenance. Do a 25-30% water change once every two weeks and you will never have problems in the long run. DO NOT THINK IMMEDIATE FIX! or you will always have problems.
