What would be a good hearty/cheap first starter coral.mushroom or anenomea. I want to begin to populate my tank (45 gal) and I want something that is "easy" to maintain and relativly tolerant of my ignorance and learning curve.
Anemones are not for beginners i wouldnt even go there for about a year after you established your tank however mushrooms are very hardy and great beginner choices so are most polyps. Anemones need an established tank and pristine water conditions, they are very sensitive, fragile creatures not recommended for the novice. I hope that helps
I would also recommend that you hold off on adding any corals until your tank has matured for 5 months or so. This will allow your tank to stabilize a bit as well as go through the various algae stages.
We got a *great* anemone for our new 25gal for our clownfish. It's made by Living Corals
Paid a little more for it, but you can't tell it's not real and I don't need to worry about it!
I don't think I'll ever get anemones. Just too much for where I'm at right now. I like the mushrooms. Very very hardy and easy to care for.
I got lucky and picked up a small piece of LR from a LFS here in town that had 3 mushrooms on it that weren't doing well. Acclimated em and put em in the tank...we now have 12 mushrooms on the rock. Not that big yet (largest is 1" across) but I think that's due to not enuff water flow and poss. too much light. Got a nice spot under an overhang in our new tank once it's done cycling.
I added an anemone after 3 months and got lucky, it has trippled in size in the next 4 months. Given the chance to do it again I would have waited a little longer!
Shrooms, xenia and GSP are great starter corals that are very forgiving
